MIXING IT WITH THE BEST IN THE MARANOA.
SAND GREENS turn again! Every 4 years the District Championships returns to a Sand Greens course. This year Mitchell Golf Club hosted the very successful event with 88 nominations for the Foursomes event which precedes the Stroke play Championship, in which there were 97 nominations. The weather was perfect for the event - cool nights and warm clear days.
The Foursomes Event is somewhat of a ‘practice’ round especially for grass green players! And probably fair to say that some benefited from the day more than others. With tee up or preferred lie through the green in place, it was going to make for some exceptional scores over the tournament. A shotgun start insured an early return to the clubhouse.
Cheryl Brimblecombe and Kym Webster from St George came in with 77 Gross, soon to be followed by Marie Cook (Wallangara) and Cate Wilmot (City). Kym was heading back to St George, but soon all four were back on the course for a play off. On the first hole Cheryl hit an amazing 2nd shot through the trees to near the green and Kym followed up with a great chip. Unfortunately Cate and Marie 2 putted and Cheryl had a tap in for the win.
The annual Monday night dinner was held at the Golf Club where the ladies all enjoyed a wonderful night of fun and frivolity (as usual). A very special announcement was made by District Past President, Pam White, bestowing Life Membership on Ruth Hungerford (Clifton). Kerry Wheeler (City) spoke also recalling the wonderful work Ruth had done with district juniors over the past 30yrs. Pam mentioned Ruth’s involvement on the steering committee, working towards the establishment of the D&SW District Ladies Golf Association in 1978. Ruth was the first Handicap Manager and has been the Association President from 1994-1998 and again from 2006-2010, whilst holding other positions on the committee for many years. She is currently Tournament Director and really knows how to run a tournament.
Day 2 was the first round of Stroke play with tee times from 8am. This is where we first started to see the scores tumble!! Cheryl Nugent (Hcap 16) from City came in with 75 off the stick .... Raelene Jones (Hcap 24) from Charleville with 81 .... Marie Francisco (Hcap 43) from Miles with 103. Great results especially from the grass green player. Many players played well under their handicap. Unfortunately for those who teed off later in the morning, the combination of tee up, manicuring of the sand greens and a stroke round made it a very long round.
Day 3 started with some tips from the committee on getting the round over a little quicker so that presentations and the drive home wouldn't be excessively late. The golfer’s speedy pace of play did nothing to deter shot making. Kym Knights from St George ((Hcap 28) had 81 off the stick.....THAT’S 53 NET. Grass green, player Samantha Hinze (Hcap 3) from Warwick didn’t let the sand faze her and carded two great rounds of 75/71 to take the Championship. Raelene Jones and Veronica Page, both sand green players from Charleville and Mitchell respectively played wonderful golf to take out the championships in their divisions.
On Tuesday afternoon at the AGM, the committee for 2015-16 was elected and an updated constitution was adopted by the members. President, Iris Thompson, welcomed David Webber from Golf Qld to the meeting. David gave an interesting talk on Club Support and Development and offered many ideas for committees to improve their club, develop their juniors and find their way around the GQ website resource centre.
The Meg Nunn team for 2015 was announced at the Championships: Non playing captain, Margaret Richards; Manager, Aliecia Freeman; Natalie Hollis; Marie Cook; Cheryl Brimblecombe; Carol Champion; Cate Wilmot; Sharon Weatherby. Best of luck ladies and a special mention to the two new members of the team, Cheryl and Carol. Enjoy your experience in the Far North!
