Dalby Golf Club hosted the recent Downs & South Western District Ladies Golf Championships. One hundred and thirty golfers from 22 clubs in the district arrived in the town to play in the Foursomes event on Monday as a warm up to the following two day stroke event. Cool, overcast and windy conditions greeted the ladies on Monday for the shotgun start. It would be fair to say that one bunker and some testy greens were the main problem encountered by the players on the first day. On Monday afternoon Golf Qld representative, Matt Field, presented a free Rules Seminar. This was attended by forty golfers and provided some lively debate and clarification regarding the Rules of Golf, which can often be seen as a contentious issue on the golf course. The visual slide presentation helped the ladies understand some of the more vexed issues encountered during a round. |

The ladies returned to the clubhouse on Monday evening for the annual dinner and presentation of the Foursomes Trophies. As the chatter grew louder during the evening, a delicious three course meal was served by the chef and staff at the golf club. The gross winners were last years runners up, Carol Champion (St George) and Samantha Hinze (Warwick). Net Champions were Barbara Mann & Judy Williams from City club.
Weather conditions remained much the same for Tuesday, with birdies difficult to come by. The greens were a little slower than they looked following weekend rain and with the wind still blowing scores were not tumbling. On Wednesday, the early groups teed off in thick fog but by afternoon the skies were clear, the temperature had risen and the scores came down. Margaret Harland from City returned an incredible 61net in the afternoon and other scores under net par kept coming in. Cheryl Sternberg from Laidley returned to her former district to take out the Open Championship with rounds of 82 & 77. Samantha Hinze went on to win the Closed Championship with rounds of 82 on both days. Bronze I Champion was Trish Harding from Middle Ridge with 97/90 and Bronze II Champion Margaret Harland from City with scores of 104/94.
It was great to see so many ladies from the sand green courses attend the event and tackle the greens, seemingly, with ease. Many friendships were renewed and the event was held with great camaraderie.
Next year’s championships will be held on sand greens at Mitchell. From all accounts, the ladies are looking forward to the challenge.
