It was Downs and South Western District's turn this year to host Golf Qld's Women's Country Week Championships and the District clubs were well represented from near and far amongst the 350 nominated players over the three day event. Toowoomba's Middle Ridge and City Clubs were the venues for players to test their skills. Both courses provided challenges for the visitors and locals alike - City with it's slick greens and Toowoomba's slower greens and varied layout - however the weather was near perfect for the event. The Foursomes event was held on Monday with Sunshine coast pair Annabelle Harris and Debbie Macauley holding off Toowoomba players, Margaret Richards and Carmel Macdermott for second on a countback from Leanne Palmer and Robyn Muir. Former Toowoomba junior and last year's winner, Samantha Foley carded a 77 at Middle Ridge in the first day of the stroke event, two shots ahead of Hollie Sinclair from Beerwah. The local city girls were topping the leaderboard in Division 1 & 2. Cara Fries, Cheryl Francis, Gail Weedon, Jenny Jenner, Del Webster and Jenny Bradford all took home prizes in their divisions at Wednesday night's presentation dinner. City Junior, Lori Ryan, finished 7th overall. Past City player Nance Flohr, now at Pacific Harbour, was also amongst the prize winners. Hollie Sinclair played a steady round of 80 on Wednesday to edge out 2013 District Champion, Paige Large, who played an impressive second round and Samantha Foley finished in third. It was Hollie's first Silver Championship win in this event. Two hole-in-ones were recorded throughout the tournament. Cathy Roberts from Horton Park on the 14th at Toowoomba and Jean Bury-Porter on the 15th at City on Wednesday. The Ladies Committees from both clubs were congratulated for coordinating the smooth running of this successful event. The 2015 Country Week Championship will be held in the Far North Qld district and hosted by Cairns and Half Moon Bay Golf Clubs. |
